Jim Zinger. I'm an experienced long-distance swimmer and have swum in many different countries and environments. Swam annual Alcatraz swim in 2007.
Long-distance swimmers often swim 100 yards away from the shore. This applies to sea, lake, and river swimmers. Most swimmers swim with a simple red-cap and with a buddy; however, this does not make them visible enough. When you are in the open water, boats, small yachts, jet skis, motorboats, etc... can barely see their way through the waters due to the radiant light of the sun, wind, and low light. Therefore, when a swimmer is on the open water he can easily be run over! Worst of all is that no one would know his/her location and condition.
