Are these good times?
Hi, what do you think about these times for a 14 year-old male? (Not me, but a friend).

100 Freestyle - 1:02.47
100 Breaststroke - 1:16.39
200 IM - 2:29.99

Thanks Smile

RE: Are these good times?
Assuming that these times are in SCY... they're not bad. Nothing special or out of the ordinary, but good. Would put him in the top half of 14 yo's in a good program, top quarter in a bad program.

Hi, it is SCY. He is part of MetroSwimming (division of USASwimming), so I am assuming top half?

RE: Are these good times?
Probably around middle of the pack in a USA-Swimming program. If those are his times fully tapered, probably a little below top half.

But don't want to discourage the kid! A lot of swimmers can drop a ton of time between 14 and 18 as puberty kicks in. With hard work, he can probably cut as much as 20% off of those times.

Actually, he's not tapered at all. These times come from a swim meet right after three weeks of hard practices.

No problem. He's actually fairly small for his age, so I'm sure he has plenty of time to grow and get better.

RE: Are these good times?
The times you have mentioned are not at all bad at the age of 14.
As you will grow old, your body will be much strong & fit to achieve these targets in less time.
You can surely work on it to improve your timings.

RE: Are these good times?
the breast time isn't bad - probably about 60th percentile...

I haven't seen this kid swim, but assuming the technique is decent, work a bit more Max VO2 and Lactate Tolerance to get the 100 free time down. What is the 50 split time?

His updated time for the 100 Breaststroke is now 1:14.20 (50 Split - 35.83)

Not bad at all, zash! Anyway we can get a video on the strokes? I love to critique techniques and it stirs some good debate as well!
