Which qualities do you think determine a good swimming coach? Somebody who is tough, or rather understanding and more casual?

As a swimmer I always preferred the more chill, laid back guys. As a coach though, it's hard to be that way all the time. I think there's no set answer. It's up to your own personal style and how you deal with complicated situations. You have to be flexible enough to make compromises and be understanding about your swimmers' issues, but at the same time, you gotta be tough enough to be like giddy-up 409 and cut through the greasy bullshit.

I think it really depends on the types of kids you are coaching. If you have a great set of kids who listen well then you can be a bit more laid back, if you don't then you have to find other alternatives.
