Do you prefer leg or arm strengthening?
I used to swim competitively in high school, and we had to strengthen both legs and arms (for obvious reasons). I tended to like arm strengthening more simply because it was easier to show off outside of swimming functions. If I met some new girls I could show them my biceps easier than my quads.

So, which do you prefer and why?

I like leg strengthening, only because your arms are naturally much stronger than your arms and I love to run.

You don't gain strength by running. That is a fact!
Though, both are very important. Legs are more powerful, therefore should me trained very hard, if you want good performances. Also, the move of the arms in swimming should be directly directed by the back, therefore, be sure to train them properly.

I believe that for a good swimmer you need both the strengths.
I was always advised by my coach to concentrate on both these aspects & today I am able to manage the strokes with hands & leg.
Both are equally important.

Get upper body benefit from swimming and lower body benefit from bicycling and walking. Since swimming uses all muscle groups it's a sure bet over any other form of excercise. I suggest a concerted dolphin kick regimen to turn abs fat into muscle.

honestly i think both are important.
but the explosive power in your legs are more important than anything else.
your underwater kick makes a HUGE difference.
I trained with Skip Kenny, who was the coach for the US olympic team for 4 years and you can not believe how much emphasis he puts on the underwater kick. and in longer races, you especially need your underwater kick and your turns to be perfect.
