Protein shakes
I have a huge think of weigh protein that I make a shake with everyday before swimming. It doesn't really cause me any cramps. I like the cookies and cream Big Smile. It is one of the only things that motivates me to get up at 4:00 am is looking forward to a good shake.

RE: Protein shakes
well protein does provide you with a little bit of energy but not as much as snacks like nuts and a good breakfast like eggs and some bacon.
i suggest you to consume the protein after your swim because that's when your muscles are screaming at you to feed them some quality protein, and as soon as you drink that protein shake, it all goes straight to your muscles and no where else. Whereas if you drink it before your swim, some of it will be wasted because your muscles are still sleeping at 4 in the morning haha

RE: Protein shakes
The amount of protein normally found in those shakes, that is far more than is needed. It is just as easy to drink a pint of chocolate milk. Drinking the chocolate milk will provide you with all of the protein you need plus it is a whole lot less expensive.

RE: Protein shakes
Protein is good especially after swimming but usually before I swim in pools Nashville, I'll try to eat more carbs. Oatmeal is a good source of complex carbohydrates and are much healthier than white breads and other carbs. Brown rice, whole grains and wholemeal breads are good sources of complex carbs.
